Maths

‘Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high quality mathematical education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.’ (DfE 2013)

At Dove Bank, our intent for mathematics is to teach a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum using Maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding. We help our children to see the importance of maths and recognise how much we use these skills in everyday life. Our maths curriculum aims to allow children to better make sense of the world around them. We facilitate children becoming confident, independent and resilient mathematicians who are also creative and enjoy maths. We use the White Rose scheme of learning.  White Rose Maths is a pioneering educational initiative that emphasises a comprehensive understanding of mathematics. It's a pedagogical approach that has been embraced by primary schools to enhance maths skills and problem-solving skills. The core of White Rose Maths is the maths mastery approach, which focusses on depth rather than acceleration, ensuring that key concepts are fully grasped before moving on. This approach aligns with the national curriculum content, providing a coherent and connected curriculum.

The core of White Rose Maths is the maths mastery approach, which focusses on depth rather than acceleration, ensuring that key concepts are fully grasped before moving on. This approach aligns with the Learning Objectives of a range of school years, providing a coherent and connected curriculum.

Underpinning our maths curriculum, practical experience of concrete resources and visual images are interwoven with rich vocabulary and oracy; pupils are exposed to a rich diet of vocabulary, across the curriculum. Discussion, explanation and the correct use of vocabulary is highly valued, intrinsic to mathematical thinking and encouraged throughout all lessons.

As well as following the White Rose scheme of learning, we subscribe to TT Rockstars. This platform provides children with the opportunity to practise key facts and provides children with a platform to practise and memorise their multiplication tables. Teachers reinforce how times tables (and being able to recall them fluently) can support other learning. For further parent information about the importance of times tables, please click HERE.
