The reading scheme at Dove Bank Primary school from Early Years upwards is Oxford Reading Tree. When children are secure with this, we begin to include a variety of texts from other sources that are categorised in ‘book bands’. Once the children are secure with the book and they become free readers they can read quality texts beyond the reading scheme. To provide additional support, children may also have Read Write Inc books to take home that are matched to the phonics phonemes (sounds) that they are on.
At Dove Bank, we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to teach children to read. RWI is a method of learning centred around letter sounds (phonemes) and their written representation (graphemes). The children learn to blend and segment to read and write effortlessly. In EYFS and KS1, children will follow a daily programme to become fluent, enthusiastic readers and writers. In KS2, for children who still need support with phonics, they will receive additional RWI intervention.
